Day 1 Travel
Qatar airways. Preboarding, there were 30 wheelchairs lined up. Most able-bodied people. Business class is really nice. The menu is extensive and pretty fancy. It also states “order any time in any order”. Over 100 movies with endless amenities at the seat. Started with champagne. So far so good, but we’ll see how we feel after this veeeeery long (16 hours) flight. The seats fully convert to a flat bed. Hopefully, we’ll still be enthused.
The flight service was disappointing. Not as good as Asian airlines but they gave us pajamas. Doha airport is immense. The number of connecting flights is unbelievable. We stood at the large status board and had to wait through 4 pages till it showed our flight. Also the number of shops is comparable to any mall in California. The business class lounge is immense- between 1 and 2 acres on two levels, including a big reflecting pool --with a better selection of food than most restaurants in Orange county. We walked through the airport to our gate. Without a doubt, Doha airport is the largest most grandiose airport we have seen. There are many children play areas strategically placed between gates. They look very different from playgrounds we are used to – kind of desert/bronze looking shapes reminiscent of Alladin’s lamp. Al says that this airport is a far cry from 35 years ago when his TWA flight stopped here to refuel and was met by a guy with a rifle who said nobody gets off. The pilot flew to Abu Dhabi to refuel. Note – Pictures are taken with phone – not new camera.
